ADRIPASS – Promoting Multimodal Connections in the Adriatic-Ionian Region
Enhancing accessibility to multimodal transport from Adriatic ports to the hinterland and strengthening the connectivity of the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) towards the Western Balkans in order to improve freight transport efficiency and sustainability: this is the goal of the ADRIPASS project. Since January 2018, under the coordination of the Central European Initiative (CEI), eleven partners from the Adriatic-Ionian area have been working together. Among them are the ports of Koper (Slovenia), Ploče (Croatia), Bar (Montenegro), the Region of Epirus (Greece) and the port of Durrës (Albania), all implementing pilot actions aimed at upgrading and improving their Port IT Systems for the administrative and operational management of port processes. Specifically, the modernization of these systems enables ports to optimize and automate inbound and outbound logistics processes, delivering significant efficiency and sustainability benefits for the entire freight transport network of the Adriatic-Ionian region.
In order to support local institutions in adequately addressing the challenges of multimodal freight transport in the ADRION area, specific analyses were also carried out at different border points. The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, supported by the project partners, coordinated field surveys and desk research aimed at identifying the main issues encountered at various types of nodes along the studied corridors. The results highlighted not only the problems faced at seaports, river ports, and road/rail border crossings, but also showed the strong potential to significantly improve multimodal freight transport in the Adriatic-Ionian area by enhancing existing infrastructure through the implementation of soft measures and targeted small-scale investments.
Based on these findings, the Institute for Transport and Logistics (ITL) drafted a transnational action plan which both summarizes the solutions to be adopted for overcoming the identified challenges and contributes to a more general roadmap for their implementation.
These activities are part of the ADRIPASS project, co-financed by ERDF and IPA funds under the Interreg ADRION Programme 2014–2020. The project aims to promote multimodal connections in the Adriatic-Ionian region and facilitate freight flows by improving the connectivity between seaports and hinterland, also through the establishment of an international cooperation network at the political level.
